Fractional CTO · Embedded · Automotive SDV · AI
I help technology companies turn hard engineering into shipped products.
Twenty years building software-defined vehicles, embedded platforms, and AI systems — and the global engineering organizations that ship them — at Tesla, NIO, Samsung, and Weavix. I work with founders, CEOs, and investors as a fractional CTO, architecture reviewer, and technical advisor when the cost of getting it wrong is high.
Who I work with
You know exactly when to call me.
I take a small number of engagements where deep automotive, embedded, and engineering-leadership experience moves the needle — usually one of these moments.
Hardware & automotive startups
Scaling an embedded or software-defined-vehicle platform — and the team behind it — without the program slipping 12 months.
CEOs without a senior technical voice
You need executive-level engineering judgment in the room — architecture, hiring, delivery — but not yet a full-time CTO.
Investors & boards (VC / PE)
Technical due diligence before you write the cheque: is the architecture real, is the team able to deliver, what's the hidden debt?
Engineering leaders scaling up
VPs and directors taking an org from 20 to 200 — structure, process, and the hard calls — with someone who has done it.
How I help
Senior technical leadership, scoped to the decision in front of you.
Every engagement is built around an outcome and a deliverable — not open-ended hours.
Architecture Review
An independent, senior read on your software and systems architecture before it goes to production — risks, scaling limits, and what to fix first.
Fractional CTO
One or two days a week of executive technical leadership — architecture, roadmap, hiring, and the conversations the board needs to hear straight.
Engineering Org Assessment
A clear-eyed evaluation of process, technical debt, hiring, and delivery velocity — and exactly where the organization is leaking time and quality.
Technical Due Diligence
Architecture, team, and roadmap assessments for VC and PE firms before an investment — what's real, what's risk, and what it will take to scale.
Executive Coaching
Mentoring for engineering managers, directors, and VPs stepping up — from someone who has built and led orgs at exactly that scale.
Embedded & SDV Strategy
Platform and product strategy for software-defined vehicles and connected hardware — silicon to cloud, security, OTA, and real-time data.
Track record
Software I've shipped reaches millions of drivers and frontline workers.

Software delivered into vehicles and platforms for Ford · BMW · Mercedes · McLaren · Aston Martin · Volvo · Jaguar Land Rover — programs where failure is not an option.
Selected work
Executives don't buy experience. They buy confidence.
Not just where I worked — what I personally drove, why it was hard, and what shipped because I was in the room.
I came in to write firmware and built a body-controls team of 12 full-time engineers — backed by 8 regular interns — with zero attrition, without ever stepping away from the code. That team delivered 14 ECUs for Model X, the Model S gateway and the foundations of Tesla's over-the-air updates, a ground-breaking BLE key fob, and cost-down designs for Model 3, then ramped Model S and Model X through the production line. When the Model S door handle had to be reinvented — hardware and software — just six weeks before start of production, we rebuilt it from scratch and still hit the date.
Team of 12 (plus 8 interns), zero attrition · 14 ECUs · door handle reinvented 6 weeks before SOP
NIO was a bet — a brand-new EV company with global ambition and almost nothing built yet. I built and led a 90-engineer digital-systems organization from the ground up across San Jose, Shanghai, and Munich, and helped recruit six VPs — former colleagues — to lead other organizations across the company. I designed four vehicle platforms plus the safety-critical, connected-vehicle architecture behind them, including the record-setting EP9 electric hypercar. I set NIO's software-defined-vehicle vision years ahead of most OEMs, generated four US patents, and delivered the digital backbone that helped carry the company to its NYSE IPO.

Samsung handed me a hard mandate: take on Mobileye. I directed a 30-engineer organization architecting Samsung's automotive compute and computer-vision stack — silicon, middleware, and AI designed as one system — for next-generation ADAS and autonomous driving. The edge wasn't any single layer; it was making the whole stack, from chip to perception, move together. That kind of cross-domain bet is exactly where I do my best work.
Unified silicon-to-vision ADAS platform built to challenge the category leader
At Weavix I lead engineering across six domains at once — embedded, Android, cloud, AI, data, and hardware — and drove the bring-up and rollout of an infrastructure-free mesh smart radio: a device that keeps frontline teams connected where there is no network to rely on. It's the kind of problem I look for — ambitious, undefined, and only solvable by making many disciplines work as one. And I'm still close enough to the architecture to know it works.
Infrastructure-free mesh radio brought to market
The thread through all of it: I take ownership of the undefined, high-stakes problem, build the team and architecture around it, and stay close enough to the code to make sure it ships. That's the value I bring to your hardest engineering decision.
Proof
Results that speak for themselves.
Standout outcomes from two decades of shipping — the track record behind the advice.
Craig achieved something that was truly unheard of — 14 ECUs with a team of 12, delivering over 800 features in 18 months.
Stood up a 90-engineer organization across three continents and four vehicle platforms — and called software-defined vehicles years before the rest of the industry caught on.
Fused silicon, middleware, and AI into a single computer-vision platform built to take on the category leader in autonomous driving head-on.
Took an infrastructure-free mesh smart radio from concept to market across six engineering domains at once — connectivity where no network reaches.
Where I go deep
Four areas. Everything else supports them.
Automotive SDV
Software-defined-vehicle platforms — architecture, security, OTA, connected services — from silicon to cloud.
Embedded systems
Safety-critical, real-time firmware and systems engineering grounded in ISO 26262 and 20 years of shipping.
Engineering leadership
Building and scaling organizations from 20 to 200 across continents — hiring, structure, and delivery.
AI-enabled products
Computer-vision and AI systems taken from prototype to production in manufacturing, automotive, and consumer.
Why it matters
Inventor of four US patents covering over-the-air updates, secure automotive networking, firewall architecture, and vulnerability detection — the kind of foundational, hard-to-get-right systems that decide whether a connected product is safe to put on the road. That's the lens I bring to your architecture.
How I work
An executive who is still close enough to the code to know it works.— I lead from the front, design for the real-world constraints, and leave behind teams that outperform without me.
